Guster @ Central Park

New York, NY

You know what's one of the coolest things to do? Take a train ride into the city with two camera bodies and four lenses, photograph your favorite band on a warm summer night in front of thousands of people, and then hang out with friends. Not bad.

I had a ton of fun shooting in Central Park, and I even learned a thing or two about lighting. This concert turned out to be a real challange to shoot. The last outdoor concert I shot was in the middle of the day with lots of ambient light. The only ambient light you'll see in my pictures is in the background of the first shot of Adam (and it's a dark blue). Even though there were lots of concert lights that illuminated the band, I guess it didn't really occur to me how light is contained and bounced off walls when I'm shooting indoors. Because there wasn't any bounced light at this show, backgrounds look pitch black.

On the plus side, I was able to borrow a 100-400mm lens from my mother, as well as her 7d. The closeup range of that lens on that camera reduced the need to expose for backgrounds. This was also the first concert I shot with my new 60d, and the first concert since 2009 where I wasn't shooting with the 1d Mark IV.

Special thanks go out to my mom for the use of her 7d, 100-400 lens and 70-200 lens, the band and their management, and a special super duper thanks to Gordon. Thanks for letting me take pictures from your sound mixing area!
