Ah, these guys!
It's been around two years since I've seen this band in person, although work on the 2008 Yule Ball DVD kept their songs alive in my heart for well over a year after that concert ended. This was definitely one of the more interesting concert shoots I've been on. I wound up shooting the crowd more than I shot the band! The enthusiasm I felt from the crowd was so visually interesting that I did what I could to capture it. This resulted in quite a few fisheye shots and a ton of random sing-along shots. There were even some quidditch shots and some incantation shots.
The other interesting thing about this concert was the fact that the band wasn't on an elevated stage. Because of that, we see quite a lot more audience than I'm accustomed to with concert photography. Combine that with videos cameras in every direction and a 360 degree view of the stage, and this shoot was challanging, fun, unexpected, and a valuable learning experience.
Special thanks go out to my friend Chris Tibaldi, who once again lent me his Canon 1D Mark IV, and also to Paul, who gave permission to shoot this concert, and who is just about the most awesome-est frontman for a band ever. It's so great when bands stick around after shows and sign autographs and take pictures with fans.
See y'all at the Yule Ball!
